alb3637085 Jacob Willemsz. van Veen (1456-1535), the Artist's Father. Artist: Maarten van Heemskerck (Netherlandish, Heemskerck 1498-1574 Haarlem). Dimensions: 20 1/2 x 13 3/4 in. (52.1 x 34.9 cm). Date: 1532.This sober image of the artist's father was painted in the year Heemskerck left Haarlem for an extended trip to Italy. The inscription on the parapet reads, "My son portrayed me here when I had lived seventy-five years so they say." Departing from his usual classicizing style, the artist reverted to vernacular Dutch in Gothic letters, declaring this a portrait grounded in life and experience. The mold served to make a paper cartridge in which the gunpowder load and the bullet could be prepared for a shot. Powder and bullet were fixed by means of a wire. In order to load his firearm, the shooter did not have to do more than bite the bottom of the cartridge and stamp the cartridge with bullet and all in the course of his weapon. The military musket was not loaded with so much precaution in the fight, the bullet went loose in the barrel, possibly wound with a piece of paper or a piece of paper. If people wanted to shoot at some distance, careful loading was necessary, hence the presence of this device in the Behouden Huys, Nova Zembla, Behouden Huys, Willem Barendsz, Jacob van Heemskerck, anonymous, c. 1590 - c. 1596, wood (plant material), cutting, l 16.4 cm × d 2.5 cm.
